The Reason of calling God Father
if there's a thing to make 'us' (read; me n my boyfriend) close, i wouldn't think it hard to tell you that it's only because of the times we spend for debating..
yup, that's the funniest fact about my relationship. we hardly have the same opinion about things around us or the way we see life. i wonder how we can still be 'together' till today, if it's not a miracle?? lol
we always argue for everything.. even if we have the same opinion, it's really difficult to memorize what it is about coz all that i keep in my long term memory is all things that we argue. :)
last week we discussed a topic that eventually went to the hottest one "why do Christian call God 'Father'?
it started when we talked about our tradition in East Nusa Tenggara especially on traditional proposal ceremony. this proposal usually happens a day before the wedding day. i told him that i like the way people in our tribe do for this ceremony. they always hide 'the girl--the bride to be' in a room and will ask 'the man--the bridegroom to be' to look for the girl. it is really funny but i love the message inside this event. for me it is a symbol of respect for the woman, that a man should go and seek the woman. i mean the struggle to find the woman shows that the man really wants to get the woman, that's why he goes to seek.
i love this session.. Joseph, my boyfriend argued that it shows the weakness of woman. for him it indirectly has killed the struggle of woman or what is famous with the term 'gender'. he said ' you woman will definitely ignore your struggle. you always shout for gender issue but today you say that you love the tradition.' he said like that because of our tradition (as i said before that we follow our father's clan or "Patriarchal").
i dont know how can this topic later got elaborated to the hottest one but i guess it's because of the word 'masculine'. yeah..he mentioned it. he said that masculinity has dominated this world and i have been influenced too that's why i like that culture. he added that masculinity has influenced the world in all aspects including our belief that's why as Christian we call God 'Father' not 'mother'.
what he said really intrigues me.. i told him that i didnt agree that we call God 'father' because of the culture of masculinity. i believe that there's a reason for everything including why we call God 'father'. Jesus Himself calls God 'His father' so can we say that Jesus was influenced by masculinity?! i know that the background culture in Israel is the same as in NTT, patriarchy but i dont agree if the culture issue is the reason why we call God 'father'.
my own opinion is the same as what K Brandon shared to me when i asked this topic in discipleship. that is about hierarchy in creation. God created Adam first and then from Adam's rib God created Eve. here we can see clearly that Eve is the part of Adam. they're one. God didn't create Eve first then created Adam from Eve's rib. I dont know why he created man first but the bible says that "Lets us make man as Our image, according to Our likeness". so, it might answer my question why we call God 'Father'. in His own image, God created Adam then Eve was created as the helper comparable to Adam.
i dont know whether there's any better explanation that is more appropriate to answer this but i myself believe that there's a hierarchy in creation in spite of how much i long for an equality between man and woman. however, it doesnt mean that God wants to make a partiality. even though i dont know why He created man first, i know that there's no partiality in creation. it just shows the glory of God for "it is the glory of God to conceal a matter" (proverb 25:2).
besides all the ideas above, i'd rather love calling God 'father' coz a father is the image of a protector and a leader. i remember when i was child when we went to visit our relatives and i got sleepy my dad always carried me on his back. it always made me comfortable. i felt like i was well protected. or when i slept my dad always prayed for me and then taught me how to pray.. he is the leader. these are my personal reasons why i love calling God father. :)
thus, though Joseph said that i have been influenced by masculinity, i dont care.. i am not influenced.. i just cant ignore the truth. the truth is the truth. that's it! and regardless of how many times we spend to debate, i still hardly take my heart away from him.. lol.. i know he doesnt believe in miracles as much as i do coz he's too realistic, however he can never pretend not knowing the fact that we're still together until today just because of miracle.. just a miracle... he doesn't realize it. once he realizes, he will get the answer of his own question.. i'm praying one day he'll realize it :p
