International Women's Day
Happy International Women's Day!!!
I don't know that we (read: women) have a special day to celebrate... almost forget or maybe have never known till I got a text from 'him'. Thank to Mr. YMT for reminding me of my day!
So, lets talk a little bit about this day..
I am not sure all women realize that it is their day coz women always have everyday (Monday to Sunday), working 24 hours (even more) and sometimes do not have time to think for themselves (they always put their family in the first list). Yet, every thing has its own story, so does this day that we call "International Women's day".
After googling and finding its history in Wikipedia I try to understand what was behind this day. It started in the United States on 28 February 1909, when women were struggling for their right of equality. At that time, women didn't have chance to vote or had no right to participate in politics. Not only in politics, there was also (still there is, maybe) employment sex discrimination. In short, women, at that time, weren't given freedom as today.
Thank God, their struggle has given us 'freedom' even though there is still slight discrimination in many parts of this world. At least, we are given chance to vote and to get higher education as men do. Even, some countries give opportunity for women to get higher education by offering the scholarships which women get more quota such as Australia Scholarship Awards (ADS), the one that I have applied two times but not successful yet. =)
Today the focus of celebration is to respect and appreciate women's economic, political and social's achievements. In some regions it loses its political flavor and simply becomes a day when men express their love for women, the same way as Mother's day or Valentine's day. Therefore when getting this text from him and knowing the meaning of this day I feel really appreciated.. thanks again to YMT.. :)
I know I haven't made a lot of achievements that need to celebrate. I mean, something that is really meaningful to others and bring a great impact to society. I am still in the process of achieving my goals. So why I am writing this post?? well,I just wanna give my high appreciation to the best woman in my life; my beloved mom. She has nothing to do with politics or any other stuff that I mention before, but her life and sacrifice have been so inspiring to my personal life. I appreciate her preparing my breakfast and lunch box every morning, I appreciate the way she communicates with her children; how she listens to me although my opinion is totally against her principal (the main reason that makes her the best in my life) and I appreciate her trust to me. My mom is not that restrained and conventional. She always talks in her way that makes her a little bit talk active, pouring out anything on her mind. But from her, I learn a lot of quality to be a good woman.
Thus, in this special day for all women around the world, we are reminded of continuing the struggle in the past. It doesn't mean we have to compete with men, no, I don't think that's the right way. We just need to develop our capacity to its fullness just as my mom and many other great women have shown us their achievements. We have to prove the world that they cannot despise us just because we are female. Keep on working hard to achieve your goals women!!! This is the day.. lets celebrate... :)
